Alturas Showdown on Saturday All is set for the 28th Alturas Drum & Bugle Corps Showdown, this coming Saturday, November 21, at the CPG Sports Complex, featuring sixteen of the best and the finest drum and bugle corps in Visayas and Mindanao, with guest celebrities, GMA-7 Starstruck artist Kyle Vergara; Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash 2010 4th Big Winner Devon Seron; Viva Artist Kris Angelica; Acoustic Heartthrob Vince Soriano; and Showtime’s “That’s My Tomboy’ Grand Winner, Epey Herher, plus plus the Mega Crew Dance Battle and HiperActive Entertainment, with a spectacular Fireworks Display in the evening. Alturas Showdown Project Director, Ariel E. Fullido, said a colorful street parade will wind up from Plaza Rizal to the CPG Sports Complex, starting at 8 AM, followed by an Opening Ceremony at 9 AM, and the Showdown which will begin at 10 AM. Ticket price is only P25 where the gross proceeds will go to Sunshine Home of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) of DSWD, Tagbilaran-By-Nite (TBN) of station DYRD, and other poor beneficiaries. Boholano wood pusher shines in Batang Pinoy TAGBILARAN CITY. – Marc Bryan Villarojo, a 9th grader of Schola Societas brought honor to the province when he clinched two silver medals in both blitz and standard categories during the Batang Pinoy competition held in Romblon last August 23 to 28. ABOUT a thousand young athletes aged 15 years old and below from Visayan provinces will converged in Romblon 2015 Batang Pinoy Visayas Qualifying Leg. This annual sports undertaking, also known as the Philippine Youth Games-Batang Pinoy, is pursuant to Executive Order No. 44 which intends to discover the country’s best young athletes from this age group. Batang Pinoy is an integral part of the national policy and program for sports development designed to effectively address the need for a comprehensive grassroots sports program centered on values formation inherent in the practice of sports and play. It also seeks to inculcate in the young minds of Filipino athletes the value of patriotism, nationalism, self-discipline, respect for law and order, hard work, teamwork, camaraderie, sportsmanship and fair play – eliminating the child’s chances of becoming a juvenile delinquent. Finally, the program serves as recruitment base for sports specialization, including training for other high level leagues, national tournaments, and international competitions. ‘Giro d’ Luca’ event cyclists  pedal 530km in Bohol today     PANGLAO, Bohol – Cycling enthusiasts from all over the country will pedal their way in the province starting today (May 29) just for fun and promote solidarity, according to organizers during the press conference at posh Bellevue resort in this town. The group will start early morning today from this town.   Dubbed as Gir D’ Luca, the three-day group cycling ride is a yearly celebration of triathlete Gianluca Guidicelli’s birthday. This unique but challenging celebration initially started in 2011 with just a bunch of friends but has since grown in numbers, opening registration to the public and with the backing of Sunrise Events, Inc. as organizer and Ford as main sponsor.   The ride will have participants complete a 530km ride in a span of three days, the distance representative of the celebrant’s 53rd birthday. It will kick off with an out-and-back ride today from this town to Jagna town and then back to Bellevue resort hotel for a total of 200 kms, the first and longest distanced ride of the event.   The second day will have the riders cover a total of 170 kms with the course going from the resort to Chocolate Hills in Carmen and then back again to this town. Mayor Yap awards  basketball champs     TAGBILARAN CITY.- The awarding ceremonies of the 1st John Geesnell “BABA” Yap Inter-Public Elementary and High School Basketball Challenge was held here theother day. Leading the pack in the elementary division is the Tagbilaran City Central Elementary School who emerged as the champion, followed by the Tagbilaran City East in 2nd Place, Manga Elementary School in 3rd Place, and Tiptip Elementary School in 4th Place. The high school division was conquered by Manga National High School followed by Mansasa National High School, and the Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School and Cogon High School. All the winners received a trophy and a cash prize. City Mayor John Geesnell “BABA” Yap has always been on the look-out for sports and wellness. This can be seen in the projects that were launched by the city government upon Mayor Yap’s assumption in office. Inter-school basketball and volleyball competitions in the barangay and city-level became a staple every year. Bohol athletes warm  up for CVRAA meet TAGBILARAN CITY. – The athletes who will compose the Bohol delegation to the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVRAA) meet in Cebu next week are now being warmed up. This was according to Dr. Wilfreda Bongalos, superintendent of the Bohol division office of the Department of Educastion (DepEd) in an interview with the BOHOL NEWS TODAY yesterday. The CVRAA meet is set on Feb. 24 to March 1 in Balamban, Cebu. Bongalos said Bohol athletes had started their training and preparation last Wednesday. The warm up will be completed on Friday next week. The schools division superintendent in Bohol said she is hopeful that the athletes could bring home more medals compared to last year’s athletic meet considering that there were fewer athletes who joined the Bohol delegation due to the magnitude 7.2 earthquake which hit the province. Bongalos said the Bohol delegation this year will be composed of 720 participants which include coaches and chaperons. They will leave for Cebu on Feb. 14.
