TAGBILARAN CITY – The blessing of the provincial headquarters of the Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for President movement in Bohol on Feb. 9 will be graced by no less than the youngest son of the popular presidential candidate.
Duterte’s campaign received a boost Wednesday when the Comelec’s First Division threw out all four disqualification cases filed against him.
With the legal obstacles out of the way, the campaign of the charismatic mayor who has packed venues wherever he goes goes full throttle.
Sebastian “Basti” Duterte will be present during the blessing of the provincial headquarters of one of the groups working for Duterte’s candidacy in Bohol.
He will be accompanied by lawyer Alexis Lumbatan, the chief of staff of Davao City Vice Mayor Paulo Duterte.
The young Duterte’s presence comes as a surprise because he has kept a low profile in his father’s political campaigns in Davao.
Many sectors have prodded him to run and follow in the footsteps of his elder siblings, Vice Mayor Pulong and the come-backing Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio but he has consistently declined.
Although the Dutertes have been prominent in Davao’s political map since the time of his grandfather, the late Gov. Vicente Duterte who was the last governor of the still undivided Davao, Basti disdains special attention.
In fact, Davaoenos have learned to respect Basti’s privacy and do not take it against him if he shuns the limelight and is rarely seen in public functions unlike scions of other politicians.
Just last week, he refused to be seated prominently during the Musicians and Artists for Duterte (MAD) concert and even declined to be acknowledge.
Although that was not the first sortie of his father that he attended, Basti continued to remain in the shadows.
For him to emerge from the shadows and represent his father in Tagbilaran is therefore a special event that proves the Duterte kids are solidly behind their dad’s candidacy.
On Monday, Basti will be interviewed live by lawyer Salvador Diputado on his top-rated morning program “Kwentas Klaras” over Station DyTR.
The radio interview will be followed by a motorcade around the city’s main streets.
This will be followed by the culminating activity which is the blessing and opening of the headquarters at Graham Ave. near Ma. Clara St.
Basti and Lumbatan will be treated to lunch which will also be the time for pictorials. (CHITO A. FUENTES)
